On Friday, May 30th, at 6:30am, I had the privilege of jumping on a Wisconsin Dells yellow school bus filled with anxious and excited elementary and middle school students from Spring Hill School. We were heading to Wisconsin Rapids for the WI State NASP Championship. This year was my second year helping with the scoring. On the hour and a half bus ride, I got to chat with coach Troy Nelson and coach Hartley and learn how much time and dedication these kids put into preparing for this huge event. Every day, for a month and a half before State, the kids came in at 6:30am to practice shooting and to work on skills. It made me so happy to hear, not only how much effort the kids put in, but also, how committed the parents were to take time out of their busy schedules to bring them in early every day. Our conversation was cut short when all of the kids burst into singing “We are the Champions”. It was the best bus ride I have ever been on!

Once we arrived at the WI Rapids Junior High School, where the event was held, the kids all started showing signs of nervousness. The middle school team from Spring Hill was up first. Their team was composed of eight girls and ten boys. They grabbed their Genesis bows and headed to the gymnasium where there were 50 targets set up (100 kids could shoot at once). Each student was set up at a target with a student from another school. After the Pledge of Allegiance was said, safety and rules were gone over, and the whistle blew, the sound of 100 arrows hitting targets filled the room. The “thwack” of all of those arrows hitting the targets at once gave me goose bumps, it was one of the coolest sounds I have ever heard! All the while, the elementary schoolers were cheering them on (an award is also given out for the school with the most school spirit). After the Spring Hill middle school team was done, the elementary team, which consisted of 11 girls and 11 boys, had their chance to fling 30 arrows. Since they had time to take it all in and see how many spectators were there, they seemed much more nervous than the first group. I know I would’ve been. Once they started shooting and heard all the cheers from the middle schoolers, they seemed to relax and really have fun.

Each kid shoots 15 arrows (5 at a time) at 10 yards then they move back to 15 yards and shoot 15 more arrows. After all of the kids shoot five arrows, a whistle is blown and they can proceed to the target and begin scoring for that round. They score with the kid that they are sharing a target with (from another school), one calls out the score, while the other marks it down and vise versa. Adults are there to help with any questions, if they are unsure, there are also DNR agents available to make the final call.

This was a two day event that had around 900 kids competing at elementary, middle and high school levels. All of the kids did GREAT! I was impressed by how composed and relaxed they seemed while shooting in front of hundreds of people (I, personally, shake terribly and have to remind myself to breathe). Overall, most of the kids felt like they did pretty well. Emily Davenport , a sixth grader from Spring Hill School, said “I think I did really good, I hope I make it to Nationals” As it turns out she did! She placed 4th overall for her grade, as an individual, and 6th for her division (elementary). Spring Hill, as a school, ended up doing awesome. The middle school kids as a team placed 2nd in WI for their division and elementary place 3rd in their division. I am so proud of them and all of the other kids who participated.

I would like to mention the top 3 schools from each division in WI. I was along for the Spring Hill School’s adventure, but I am proud of everyone who competed. A team score is compiled by taking the top four female shooters scores, the top four male scores and then the next best four scores (male or female), for a total of 12 scores. The elementary division: Stratford Private 1st, John Muir Elementary 2nd, Spring Hill Elementary 3rd. The Middle School division: Osseo-Fairchild 1st, Spring Hill Middle School 2nd, Wayne Bartels Middle School 3rd. High School Division: Osseo-Fairchild 1st, Cadott Jr/Sr High School 2nd, East De Pere High School 3rd. For a complete listing of all school and individual scores throughout the U.S. go to nasptournaments.org

I hope these kids found a passion in archery, like I have. I was so honored to be a small part of their journey. I am truly grateful for the NASP program for introducing all of these kids to the wonderful sport of archery!!!

I don’t know about you, but this has been one of the craziest winters on record! I don’t know if we can even call it a winter when the temps here in Wisconsin for the month of March, have averaged in the 70s! The bucks are enjoying this very mild weather by holding onto their antlers longer than previous years. By now, we would’ve walked all our ground and we’d be gearing up for turkey season but this year we are just starting to hit the woods and with some good success! Here are a few of the sheds we’ve found so far…..

Brian found these sheds from a buck we had a LOT of history with in 2011! We called him “Josher” after Josh Smith, who was the first guy to lay eyes on this buck. Now that he’s made it through the WI gauntlet and he’s another year older, we feel he’s earned the name “Mr. Smith”!

I can’t believe that our hunting season is coming to an end! We’ve had quite an exciting season and we can’t wait to share to share it with you on next year’s show. As most of you know, we all hunt our own property or small pieces of leased land and work all year to get ready for our favorite time of the year…deer season! We spend hours upon hours planting food plots, scouting and setting stands. Once fall rolls around, all we can do is sit back in our tree stand, bow in hand, and hope for the chance we all wait for.

This year we caught multiple bucks on Cuddeback that we have had history with and a lot of new bucks that definitely made our hit list. We know the bucks were there, now the hard part…outsmarting them. Katie Pipp drew a Montana deer tag and took the long flight to “Timbuktu” to hunt opening week on team members Robbie and Nikki Dockter’s land. They did a lot of scouting and spot & stalk hunting to figure out where the big boys were hanging out. On day four of her hunt, they set up a ground blind and she arrowed a 160” whitetail in velvet. It was the “best day of (her) life”, not only did she harvest her biggest buck, but Alan also proposed to her!

A couple of weeks later was opening bow season in Wisconsin. We were all dreaming of a mature buck walking under our stand, but Ann Altmann had it happen. Sitting in with her husband Jon, she smoked an awesome 8 point buck. What a great way to start the season!

After an exciting opening weekend, we hunted hard, but luck just wasn’t on our side. We saw bucks on trail cams and off in the distance, but nothing we could fling an arrow at. That all changed October 22nd, when Shelly was in one of her favorite stands, set over a food plot where she had been seeing a buck we called Crab Claw 8. This is a buck she had a lot of history with and really wanted a chance at. Everything fell into place that night and she made an awesome 25 yard shot. After a slow start to the season, all of a sudden it started to snowball.

Five days later, team member Josh Smith hit the woods on his lease property in Southern Wisconsin and let his Mathews rip on a bruiser 8, his biggest to date and his first buck since 2006.

Two days later, on November 12th, Alan Dosedla turned the camera over to Katie. He set a stand on a ridge where two mature bucks had been cruisin’ and hoped for the best. A buck we have all had a lot of history with the last couple of years named Lucky ended his lucky streak that night when he walked under Alan’s stand. He released a Muzzy on this 5 year old buck, and the legend of Lucky ended.

Two weeks after Alan shot Lucky, Nate and Brian had a double hitter within five minutes of each other! Nate arrowed a mature buck we named Muley, because he had no browtines to speak of, and Brian shot a management 8. We were on a roll!!!

That brings us to gun season. Shelly took her 10 year old daughter Halie out for her first whitetail hunt. She dropped a doe with her .243 in its tracks. Her reaction was priceless and the essence of what hunting is all about.

Alan also headed out during gun season, this time on his grandparent’s property in southern Wisconsin with a smoke pole. He nailed a mature 8 point buck just shortly after setting up in his stand…he was on a roll.

All this time, Tara was hitting the woods hard. Call it stubbornness or determination, but she wasn’t ready to hang up her Mathews for a rifle. She hunted the entire gun and muzzleloader season with her bow in hand. All of her dedication paid off on December 1st when she finally got to let an Easton fly at a great 8. After a tough season, it was such an awesome feeling for her to get her hands around those antlers!

These are just some of the highlights of our season so far, but our season is not over yet. Until it is…we will keep Workin’ for Whitetails!
