Archive for April, 2011

As the month of April was starting to near, it felt like winter more than spring.  Mr. Groundhog was SO wrong! It had been a long and drawn out winter involving months of large amounts of snow and bitter cold weather. Our deer heard was starting to show the effects and throughout the month a few dead deer were found.

Early in the month the weather broke and the hunt for bone was on.  The first of the year was grabbed and it didn’t take long before the antlers started to pile up.  Late winter food sources seemed to be the key.

The first really good horn would go to Nikki.  On a sunny, cool day she would score not on a big whitie horn like she planned but rahter on a great mule deer shed.  We get the chance to find either on our food sources here in Montana.  In fact it’s very common to see them run together throughout the year.

As the Easter season was nearing the family took full advantage of one of the nicest days of the year to get out and take an all day hike.  Our daughter had a new best friend and they enjoyed the sun together over a lunch break.

As the family combed the woods that very same day, Nikki would hit “payday” yet again on another giant shed.  She was all smiles as she proudly displayed the best whitetail horn she has ever found and we found this year.  Congrats, what a great horn!!!

As the month started to fade it seemed the new addition to our family (Champ) was starting to get the horn hunting thing-y down.  As we attempt to make a shed dog out of him, he is showing signs of improvement and knowledge every day.

The month is just a few days from coming to a close.  My thoughts are starting to drift away from hunting horns, as dreams of planting food plots have started.  I had the chance to get out one time last Monday.  As the sun was setting I thought back holding our 65th horn of the spring and couldn’t help but regret another shed season coming to an end.

We are hosting a 3D archery shoot on May 21st from 1pm to 6pm (or whenever the last person leaves! haha)  All the proceeds will be going to fund our 3rd Annual Kicking Bear camp and to help start up other camps across the country.  If you aren’t familiar with Kicking Bear, it is a not for profit organization that provides kids and their families two days of fun in the outdoors at no expense to the families!  Kids learn how to shoot bows and even if they don’t own a bow, its okay, because the camp brings enough so that every child can participate!  Our camp also has activities such as: 100 ft waterslide, hay ride to the woods for a shed hunt (kids got to keep a shed!),  kickball, bon fire and more!  The camps are FREE to everyone- all we ask is that you invite a child you may be heading down the wrong path in life and maybe could use a positive mentor or  you might know a child whose family who has recently experienced a tragedy, please invite them along!  If you are interested in attending our Kicking Bear camp, please go to our homepage and click on the Kicking Bear banner for more information and to pre-register!

Well it is finally that time of year!  Winter is over, and its time to put down some turkeys and start thinking about food plots.  Today I had the privilege of taking my cousin Mike on his first ever turkey hunt.  It was a perfect morning and the birds were just a hammerin.  We were right in the middle of two groups of gobblers.  After about ten minutes of calling, the birds flew down and started heading our way.  As soon as they saw the decoys they committed and came in on a string.  Two jakes put on quite a show and my cousin took his first bird at 15 yards.  The excitement he expressed reminded me why we do what we do.  It truly is a passion, and although our show is called Workin’ For Whitetails, I guarantee that come spring, we will all be chasin them long beards.  Congrats Mike, thank you for letting me be there!
