As the month of April was starting to near, it felt like winter more than spring. Mr. Groundhog was SO wrong! It had been a long and drawn out winter involving months of large amounts of snow and bitter cold weather. Our deer heard was starting to show the effects and throughout the month a few dead deer were found.
Early in the month the weather broke and the hunt for bone was on. The first of the year was grabbed and it didn’t take long before the antlers started to pile up. Late winter food sources seemed to be the key.
The first really good horn would go to Nikki. On a sunny, cool day she would score not on a big whitie horn like she planned but rahter on a great mule deer shed. We get the chance to find either on our food sources here in Montana. In fact it’s very common to see them run together throughout the year.
As the Easter season was nearing the family took full advantage of one of the nicest days of the year to get out and take an all day hike. Our daughter had a new best friend and they enjoyed the sun together over a lunch break.
As the family combed the woods that very same day, Nikki would hit “payday” yet again on another giant shed. She was all smiles as she proudly displayed the best whitetail horn she has ever found and we found this year. Congrats, what a great horn!!!
As the month started to fade it seemed the new addition to our family (Champ) was starting to get the horn hunting thing-y down. As we attempt to make a shed dog out of him, he is showing signs of improvement and knowledge every day.
The month is just a few days from coming to a close. My thoughts are starting to drift away from hunting horns, as dreams of planting food plots have started. I had the chance to get out one time last Monday. As the sun was setting I thought back holding our 65th horn of the spring and couldn’t help but regret another shed season coming to an end.
